My interest in both art and nature began early in my life, as a child growing up on a dairy farm in Greenwood, Delaware. There were always things to do outside: I had my own little garden, an ever-changing cast of pets, and acres of woods and fields to explore. I also loved creating things, and spent hours with my grandmother, a former art teacher, constructing paper crafts at her kitchen table. My parents encouraged my interests, and when I was in 4th grade, they enrolled me in art lessons, which I continued through high school. In those lessons I first learned to use watercolor and pen & ink, which continue to be my favorite media.
After high school, I attended Messiah College, and earned a B.A. in Studio Art, with a Drawing concentration. I also minored in Environmental Science, and through the combination of disciplines, I realized that I wanted to focus my artistic endeavors on illustrating the plants and animals that fascinated me. In studying and drawing even the most ‘simple’ components of the natural world, I find myself repeatedly amazed by their masterful design and intricate details. I strive to make art in a way that reflects my deep appreciation for the glory of Creation.
I am currently working as a freelance artist and pursuing opportunities in natural science illustration. Whenever possible, I attend classes with Brookside Gardens School of Botanical Art and Illustration. I live in Potomac, Maryland with my husband Lee, who is a constant help and support in my venture as an artist.
